Features and Services
The overall development of the TAPAS service is guided by a few basic principles and requirements. The first is a community need for low-cost TEI publishing and archiving services, to support people who have TEI data but lack institutional infrastructure or access to expert XML programming skills. The second is a community need for a space where TEI data can be gathered and studied, to learn about the history and range of TEI encoding practices.
Based on these premises, TAPAS has laid out a road map to shape the evolution of the service. Our long-range plan includes the following steps.
Develop basic interface to support contribution of TEI data and the creation of projects and collections
Once TAPAS has a critical mass of projects and TEI data, develop more advanced features to support specific forms of usage, including specialized viewing options and support for teaching
As the community of TAPAS users grows, develop features to support community-specific features, such as specialized schemas and stylesheets for the needs of particular user groups, support for community-specific workflows
As the mass of TEI data grows, develop features to support the study of TEI data in the aggregate, including support for the study of ODD customization files, corpus-wide viewing and analysis
Over the longer term, take advantage of developments in repository-based publication infrastructure
Over the longer term, broaden TAPAS’s support for TEI encoding and editing workflows, to include support for authoring and editing of TEI/XML data
As TAPAS’s collection of TEI data and projects matures and as the TEI itself evolves, develop features to support data curation and migration
The following new features are scheduled for release between July and December 2017:
New Hydra-based interface, with streamlined work flows and greater reliability
Bulk upload and ingestion of TEI files, for more efficient project creation
New reading interface options, offering more fine-grained user control over the TEI display, and a zoomable distant-reading view for visualizing entire documents
Improved support for support records, including automatic association of personographies, gazetteers, bibliographies, etc. with your primary TEI records, and improved display of personographies (etc.) both as annotations and as independent files
This is a brief summary of the current features and capabilities of TAPAS; please visit our documentation page for more detailed information and instructions on TAPAS features & services.
Upload of TEI files and associated metadata
Viewing of formatted TEI files through a reading interface that provides a variety of options for display and interaction (including raw XML view, formatted “reading” views, and graphical “visualization” views)
Browsing of the the entire TAPAS , including filtering based on selected metadata fields
Sample TEI files and template files that model the basic encoding of common document genres in TEI
Resources for teachers and workshop instructors, including sample assignments, hotsheets, slide sets, and a dedicated project space that makes it easy to get started quickly
